How To Go Viral On TikTok: 7 Simple, Effective Pro Tips

Going viral is a dream come true for many content creators. Having a post or video get shared and viewed by millions can be life changing. It’s also a bit of a lottery ticket. Still, there are steps you can take to improve the odds.

The lockdowns of 2020 drastically altered TikTok’s viewership and content. With millions of young people stuck at home, it enjoyed a nearly 200% growth among 15-25 year old users. Although it’s still the place with millions of silly dance videos, people stuck at home craved greater variety. The app delivered. Now it offers tons of informative and yes, entertaining videos made by people just like you. Many of them don’t even know how to dance! Here’s how to go viral on TikTok.
Keep it Short

TikTok’s most popular videos cover just about any topic you can imagine –– all of them tailor made for its unique algorithm. Successful creators never forget that TikTok isn’t like other apps. Although plenty of social media platforms have been accused of creating short attention spans, TikTok’s content actually seems designed for them. One minute may not seem like a long time but in TikTok world it’s the equivalent of a three-hour Marvel movie. Why? Because the algorithm notes how many viewers watch your entire video. You’re more likely to get a high number of completions if the video is 15 seconds.

TikTok will send your video to thousands of member’s “For You” section but if enough people aren’t watching it will quickly disappear. If no one watches a video on TikTok does it really exist? The other thing to keep in mind is the “three second rule.” No this doesn’t refer to how long candy can lie on the ground before it’s unsafe for consumption. Rather, you want to grab the audience in the first three seconds. It’s like an action movie, only faster.
Know Your Trends

Trends drive TikTok. If you include a currently popular song in the background of your video it improves its odds. Don’t just watch TikTok videos, spend time on Snap and Insta. TikTok’s Discover page can help you learn about other user’s style choices and preferences which can take your videos in a different direction. If you want to know how to go viral on TikTok in 2021, being a trendsetter is a great way to do it.
Encourage Re-Watching

Another way to supercharge your visibility is to increase the average amount of time viewers spend watching your videos while not making them any longer. How? By having a sped-up section near the middle or a bit of text at the opening. Viewers will often go back to the beginning and watch again if they missed something. This only works if you have compelling content of course.

Engage with the Audience

Try to respond to every comment –– at least the ones that aren’t from haters. Like most platforms, TikTok tracks engagement and replying to more comments signals your engagement. TokTok values community and you’ll likely find a collection of viewers who like your video and will be interested in your product or service. Just don’t reply immediately to comments as the app may temporarily block you from responding.
Include a Call To Action

This is Blogging 101 but it definitely applies here. Always ask the viewer to comment, share, or otherwise engage. Doing this near the end of the video is ideal. You don’t want the video to seem like an extended sales pitch but mentioning your business’s discount or promotion near the close is a good idea.

Make it Look Good

Although the app offers its own suite of editing tools, many recommend using third-party apps like iMovie or Adobe Rush. Well-edited videos get more attention. So do ones that are well shot (unless poor quality video is part of the effect you want).

Be Passionate

I’m saving the best for last here. It should be obvious but if you don’t care about the content you’re creating, viewers will spot it. Inauthentic marketers are doing themselves more harm than good because TikTokers reward what seems real to them — which is why so many awkward moments go viral.

Content usually goes viral because it triggers an emotional response –– it makes us laugh, cry, or just feel less alone in the world. Viewers share those videos with others. So if you take the time to learn TikTok and create authentic content, you’ll not only gain a following but connect with people who may not be on other platforms. And that alone will make it all worthwhile.
