Is The Way You Talk About People Affecting You?

Here are three things we love this week.

1. Video: This Is Water – David Foster Wallace Commencement Speech

What is it: David Foster Wallace, once called by The Los Angeles Times, “one of the most influential and innovative writers of the last 20 years”, delivered this commencement address to graduating class at Kenyon College in 2005. It was later published as a book This is Water in 2009.

Why we love it: Are you exhausted by the daily, almost hourly, barrage of breaking new?. Even if you stopped turning on the news or getting alerts on your phone, someone is going to bring it up in conversation. Watch David Foster Wallace’s humorous, heartfelt reminder that we get to decide what we think and what has meaning.  He also reminds us that the freedom of choosing what to think is not based on our hard-wired beliefs.  It is achieved by looking outside ourselves.

2. Article: What You Say About Others Says A Lot About You, Research Shows

What it is: Research by a Wake Forest University psychology professor, presented on the site ScienceDaily.com, concludes that how you see others is linked to how happy, kind-hearted and emotionally stable you are.

Why we love it: We are often looking for ways to be happier and find more joy!  If this is you, this article is a must read!  It turns out that your emotional stability is directly connected to seeing others positively.  And guess what…negative perceptions of others are linked to higher levels of narcissism and antisocial behavior (if you are pointing fingers right now, you’ve missed the point).  Read the article to learn more about how to live life in a loving, acceptant, non-judgemental way.

3. Quote: “When you judge another you do not define them, you define yourself.” – Wayne Dyer

Why We Love It:  It is human nature to believe that when someone judges or criticizes us that they may actually be an authority on who we are.  Most times, the exact opposite is true.  The only reason they recognize those qualities is that those are the qualities they typically judge the most about themselves.

We hope your week is as shiny as you are!
