“I’ve got a job interview! It’s been a while since I’ve done this.” My mom admitted, nervously.
I’m turning 30 this year, and I think that’s the first time I’ve ever heard those words coming out of her mouth. I felt her nerves, and let me tell you… I would have given anything to go in and do that job interview for her.
As she left the house, I couldn’t help but wonder:
Have you ever experienced that peculiar moment where you realize that your parents are just people?
…One of those moments where you suddenly notice that they’re just like you—just as scared, just as flawed and just as vulnerable to the challenges that come with being in this world?
…This moment is an awakening, isn’t it? I made an audio for you about it.
It’s in this moment where your perceived security blanket vanishes and you can no longer buy into the belief that someone else can save you.
…And the more you start to see your parents or your family as “just people,” the more you get to explore what YOU believe, what YOU stand for, and who YOU are outside of your family unit.
This awareness hit me upside the head at age 22. And it felt lonely to realize that it was okay to release so many of the beliefs that I was taught so that I could come up with my own way of seeing the world.
Tune in here if you’d like some more thoughts (and an exercise you can do!).
Self-actualization can be so uncomfortable. It’s a process, not an event. Take your time. Be kind to yourself.
I get it. I’m here for you.
