What Job Is Hiring During Covid-19 (Part-Time Opportunities, Too!)

Covid-19 has changed a lot of things in our lives, but one of the biggest impacts it’s had is on the job market. With many companies going remote, or even going under, a record number of people have found themselves unemployed due to the global crisis.

Losing your job while going through a global crisis is probably one of the most difficult things you will have to deal with. Trust me, as a career coach, I understand the struggle we’re all facing when it comes to the Covid-19 job market. But don’t worry — It’s not as daunting as it may seem.

If you’re looking for a new job, or even if you’re just looking for a part-time gig to help bring some extra cash in or make up for lost income, there are plenty of options.

But you have to start somewhere. So, exactly what job is hiring?

  • Virtual Assistant

There are so many opportunities in being a virtual assistant, far beyond just administrative duties. It’s an incredibly diverse job that’s great for anyone with a go-getter attitude.

As a virtual assistant, you have the opportunity to tackle different day-to-day tasks as you progress in your chosen field. Not only do you get to experience different roles, but you will also further develop your critical skills, such as organization and communication. A virtual assistant position is a clerical job, yes, but it’s more than just giving the best you can to the company you’re working for. It’s also about honing your skills for a much better opportunity for your career in the future.

Here’s a short list of jobs that are hiring virtual assistants, so you can get started:

  • Bookkeeping. You’re in charge of the company’s financial data and compliance by maintaining accurate books on accounts payable. It’s pretty much all about numbers in this type of job, so if you enjoy crunching numbers, this might be the one for you.
  • Data Entry. If you have excellent attention to detail, strong written and oral communication skills, the ability to multitask, and can work with minimal supervision, data entry could be the perfect part-time job. As a data entry operator, your main role would be to enter data using various processes like typing and voice recording into computers.
  • Social Media Management. This is a great part-time job to consider. Since Covid-19 hit, so many businesses have been forced to move online, putting social media presence at the top of their marketing strategy list. Having someone to manage and maintain relevant content, represent their brand, and maintain an online presence on all of the platforms is critical right now for most businesses.
  • Transcriber. As a transcriber, your role is to listen to recorded pieces and audio files and convert what you hear into text format. It sounds easy, but it’s also a little challenging. There are so many businesses that require a transcriber, so it’s a great gig if you’re looking to dabble in a few different industries.
  • Customer Support. Your main role here is to enhance a business’s client satisfaction by answering emails or customer calls and by representing the company you’re working for. Customer support resolves the customer’s problems and makes sure their customers get the most out of the service. If you’re really good with people and have a lot of patience, this is definitely the job for you.

  • Online Teacher

If you have the natural gift of connecting with children, and have always wanted to teach, this job could be the perfect part-time job to squeeze into your schedule.

Since the pandemic has forced educators to take their lessons online, so many more opportunities have arisen for those who have always dreamt of getting into education, but may not have known where to start.

And don’t expect virtual learning to disappear once we can go back to school. Studies have shown that online learning is incredibly beneficial to students, as they can retain up to 60% more information learning virtually, compared to up to 10% when learning in person.

If you’ve been wanting to go out there and start teaching or tutoring, here are some companies that are hiring online educators:

  • Kaplan. This non-profit is one of the world’s most diverse education providers, and offers education and services at all levels.
  • VIPKID. If you’re passionate, ready to make an impact, and consider English as a Second Language (ESL) as your strong point, consider applying for a job as an educator in VIPKID. You can make between $14-$22 per hour and you get to select your own hours and availability.
  • Pearson. If you’re more interested in higher education, check out Pearson. They have multiple levels of education, but if you want to offer your services beyond high school age, you can do so here!
  • Writer

You may not realize it, but companies are always looking for good writers. Don’t underestimate the value of having strong writing skills, especially recently. Now more than ever, distinct communication is what the world needs — With businesses being dragged down by Covid-19 over the past year, it’s no wonder they’re seeking help from freelancers to help them get back on track.

To get you started, here are some of the online platforms you can look for writing jobs if you’re on it:

  • Fiverr. An online marketplace for freelance work for any industry. You can offer your writing services by signing up as a freelancer on the platform and start earning extra cash.
  • Freelancer. This is the largest international freelancing and crowdsourcing marketplace, which connects employers and freelancers across the globe. With the help of this platform, you will be able to advertise your skills, write what you can, and get paid quickly.
  • PeoplePerHour. A community for freelancers that helps companies outsource specific talents for specific tasks.

And if you’re having trouble finding work, don’t worry — The employment rate for writers and authors is predicted to increase by 8% between 2016 and 2026

Finding out what jobs are hiring has always been hard, and the pandemic has made it that much more difficult. But with the right resources and hard work, anything is attainable. With the future of jobs being almost completely remote thanks to our  “new normal,” finding good jobs online is simpler and more accessible.

With a little endurance, compassion, and hard work, you can definitely get there!
